At this year’s WWDC keynote, Apple revealed that it is introducing adaptive audio to the AirPods. The new feature combines Transparency Mode with Active Noise Cancellation to match the conditions of your natural environment.
Using machine learning, Adaptive Audio will create a more optimized listening experience so you don’t have to fiddle with audio settings on your iPhone while you’re on the go.
Now when your AirPods detect that you’re on your way to or from work and there’s a lot of background noise with people talking, a new feature called Conversational Awareness will automatically switch to transparency mode and reduce noise. will activate the background sound.
Conversational Awareness aims to make the experience of ambient listening – when you’re walking down a street or at work and still want to be aware of your surroundings – much more adaptive (I can see where they get the name). found).
The feature can identify background noises like distant conversations or a marching band and reduce the volume on these, while activating the transparency mode at the same time.
It is not adjustable but adaptable
While active noise cancellation is a feature currently available only for the AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods Max, there are only three modes available – ANC, transparency mode, and off.
By introducing Adaptive Audio, Apple has added a fourth mode that may offer the middle ground noise canceling we were looking for. We previously wrote about six features I hope Apple adds to iOS 17 at WWDC and the adjustable transparency mode was a big one for us.
It comes down to the fact that the transparency mode is limited to nothing on either really high. Adaptive Audio offers a solution by automatically adjusting the level of transparency to match the environment. Looks like Apple really listened.
