Vitalik Buterin says Ordinals has revived ‘builder culture’ on bitcoin

According to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, the arrival of bitcoin (BTC) ordinals signals an “organic return of builder culture” to the network.

Buterin made this comment on Twitter on July 7 space Where he spoke extensively with bitcoin proponents Eric Wall and Udi Wertheimer about what bitcoin developers can learn from Ethereum developers.

Buterin praised Ordinals and the BRC-20 token standard, which he sees as a rejection of “static” politics in the bitcoin ecosystem.

“The ordinances are really starting to bring back the culture of working. It feels like there’s real pushback in the laser-eye movement, which is good,” Buterin said.

The conversation, which lasted for about two hours, focused on the issue of scalability. Wall claimed that bitcoin’s Lightning Network cannot scale for future users and that it “often” fails when processing “even medium-sized payments”.

In response, Buterin suggested that the best approach would be to focus on implementing a variety of layer-2 solutions while simultaneously looking for ways to make the bitcoin base layer more efficient.

“I think it is good to focus on Rollup and therefore remain open to ZK-Snark-based scaling solutions.”

Wertheimer believed that the introduction of ROLLUP could produce an interesting side effect.

“If we adopted Rollup for bitcoin, we actually also get an execution environment (…) we can do smart contracts,” Wertheimer said.

Wall and Wertheimer – the two key individuals behind Ordinals project Taproot Wizards – are vocal exponents of Ordinals and regularly advocate for building increased functionality on top of the bitcoin network.

His stance has drawn criticism from more radical bitcoiners, who claim that NFTs and smart contracts on bitcoin undermine its perceived primary function as a peer-to-peer cash network.

Such critics include Jan3 CEO Samson Mo, who believes that ordinals waste block space that could otherwise be devoted to bitcoin payments.

Wall took note of these criticisms and explained that bitcoin could be used as a “proof system” for zero-knowledge proofs that would not crowd the network.

“My point of view is that we (Bitcoiners) have always wanted to do DeFi related things, but we wanted the bitcoin base layer to just act as a judge or arbiter of that computation and not require the computation to run on-chain. said Wall.

“We shouldn’t just think about second layers as a way to make payments, but I think we can also think about them[as a way of doing]expressive things.”

The discussion sparked fresh controversy in the bitcoin community, with Wertheimer criticizing Mo and Blockstream CEO Adam Beck for dismissing talks with Buterin.
