The IPL 2023 season has been very exciting in the last overs, which has put immense pressure on the death overs bowlers. This season seems to have witnessed more of these tense encounters than any other season in the tournament’s history. The latest victim of this high-stakes scenario was Mohit Sharma, who is on the verge of joining the esteemed group of bowlers who have successfully defended runs in the death overs. However, Ravindra Jadeja’s moment of brilliance turned the tide in favor of Chennai Super Kings, helping them to a stunning five-wicket win and their fifth IPL title.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya came under attack from veteran batsmen Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag for the team’s defeat. In a rain-affected game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with Chennai needing 13 off the last over chasing 171 in 15 overs, Hardik handed Mohit the crucial responsibility. Mohit has been the standout bowler for Gujarat, taking two consecutive wickets in his last over to bring the team back into contention.
Mohit started the over in fine style, bowling four consecutive yorkers against Jadeja and Shivam Dube, conceding just three runs. His execution against CSK looked impeccable, and he looked confident in his approach. However, the tables turned on the fifth and sixth deliveries when Mohit erred in his line and length, resulting in a six over long-on and a four over short fine leg, allowing CSK to chase down the revised target.
Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment with Hardik, accusing him of distracting Mohit at those crucial moments. Gavaskar pointed to an incident where Mohit was sent water before the last ball, after which Hardik approached him to discuss both the deliveries. Gavaskar believed that such interruptions were unnecessary when Mohit was effectively executing his plan.
Virender Sehwag echoed Gavaskar’s sentiments during an interaction with Cricbuzz. He added that Hardik’s actions had “bothered” Mohit, causing him to lose focus and consequently erred in his line and length during the last two deliveries.
Big moment in sports!

It is essential for captains to maintain clarity and trust in their bowlers during these high-pressure moments. Any interference or distraction can have a detrimental effect on the bowler’s performance. As the cricketing world reflects on this exciting IPL season, the incident involving Hardik Pandya and Mohit Sharma is a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and allowing bowlers to execute their plans without unnecessary disruption.
