NIRF Ranking 2023: What are the criteria and criteria behind the ranking of best colleges, universities in India?

NIRF Ranking 2023: The Ministry of Education on Monday released the NIRF Ranking 2023 and said it is “significant” for evaluating the “quality” of educational programs offered by higher education institutions in colleges and universities in India. Also known as the India Rankings 2023, which implements the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) prepared for the purpose by the Ministry of Education in 2015, they were released by Union Minister of State for Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh in the presence of Vice-Chancellors. it was done. and directors and other top officials of higher education institutions. This was the eighth consecutive edition of the India Rankings of Higher Education Institutions in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said that India Rankings serve as a valuable tool for students in identifying universities based on their relative position in various categories and subject domains among higher educational institutions in the country . He added that it has also helped the universities identify areas for improvement in teaching, research, resources and infrastructure.

The Minister stressed the need to work collectively to bring more and more institutions within the ambit of India Rankings as well as recognition and with regard to increasing the number of institutions applying for rankings in various categories and subject domains expressed happiness.

NIRF Ranking 2023: Three different additions this year

The three different additions to the 2023 edition of the India rankings are as follows:

– Introduction of a new subject called Agriculture and allied sectors

Integration of the ‘Innovation’ rankings done earlier by Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) into the India Rankings, with an aim to reduce the burden on institutions of providing the same data to two different agencies.

To expand the scope of ‘Architecture’ to ‘Architecture and Planning’ to include institutions offering courses in urban and town planning.

With the addition of a new category (Innovation) and subject domain (Agriculture and Allied Sectors) and the expansion from ‘Architecture’ to ‘Architecture and Planning’, the current portfolio of India Rankings has grown to 13 categories and subject domains that have been ranked Is. It is noteworthy that during the first year of the India Rankings in 2016, rankings were announced for universities as well as three domain-specific rankings, namely engineering, management and pharmacy institutions. However, in a span of eight years, four new categories and five new subject domains have been added to bring the total number to five categories – Overall, Universities, Colleges, Research Institutes and Innovations and 8 subject domains – Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture and Planning, Medicine, Law, Dentistry and Agriculture and allied fields.

NIRF Ranking: Five Broad Parameters

The five broad categories of parameters identified in NIRF and their importance on a scale of 10 are given below:

Each of these five parameters has 2 to 5 sub-parameters and a total of 16-18 sub-parameters are used for ranking higher educational institutions in different categories and subject domains. The institutes are ranked on the basis of the sum total of the marks allotted to each of these five broad groups of parameters.

In addition to the parameters used for the overall category, the following two additional sub-parameters were included for ranking institutions under ‘Research Institutions’ – Research papers published in journals included in the first quartile of the Journal Citation Report (JCRQ1) , and h index .

In addition, sourcing data on various parameters from the applicant institutions, third party sources of data are also used wherever possible. Scopus (Elsevier Science) and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) are also used to retrieve publications and citation data. Derwent Innovation is used to obtain data on patents and the data from these sources is then shared with institutions with a provision to give their inputs for transparency.

NIRF Ranking: Highlights of this year

• Indian Institute of Technology Madras retained its first position in the overall category for the fifth consecutive year, i.e. from 2019 to 2023 and in engineering for the eighth consecutive year, i.e. from 2016 to 2023.
  
• The top 100 in the overall category included 44 CFTI/CFU INIs, 24 state universities, 13 deemed universities, 18 private universities, 4 agriculture and allied sector institutes and 3 management institutes.
  
• The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore topped the universities category for the eighth consecutive year, i.e. from 2016 to 2023. It ranked first in the research institutes category for the third consecutive year, i.e. from 2021 to 2023.
  
• IIM Ahmedabad topped the management stream for the fourth consecutive year, i.e. from 2020 to 2023, retaining its first position. It was ranked in the top two in the Management of India ranking from 2016 to 2019.
  
• All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi occupied the top position in medicine for the sixth consecutive year, i.e. from 2018 to 2023. ,
  
• National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad has topped the rankings in pharmacy for the first time, pushing Jamia Hamdard to second place. Jamia Hamdard was ranked first for four consecutive years i.e. from 2019 to 2022.
  
• Miranda House retained the first position among colleges for the seventh consecutive year i.e. from 2017 to 2023.
  
• IIT Roorkee has been ranked first in the discipline of Architecture for the third consecutive year i.e. from 2021 to 2023.
  
• National Law School of India University, Bengaluru retained its first position in Law for the sixth consecutive year i.e. from 2018 to 2023.
  
• Colleges from Delhi continued to dominate the rankings of colleges with five of the top 10 colleges from Delhi.
  
• Savita Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences secured the top position for the second year in a row.
  
• Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi has topped in Agriculture and Allied Sectors.
  
• Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur secured the first rank in the innovation category.
