BangaloreKarnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced that ahead of the recently concluded assembly elections in the southern state, the Congress party had promised five electoral guarantees in its manifesto. Making the announcement, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state cabinet thoroughly discussed all the guarantees and decided to implement them in the current financial year “without any caste or creed discrimination”. We had a cabinet meeting today. We discussed in depth all five promises. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters after the cabinet meeting, “We have decided that all the five guarantees will be implemented in the current financial year.”
What are the five electoral guarantees promised by the Congress?
The five ‘main’ guarantees that the Congress promised to fulfill after coming to power in Karnataka were 200 units of free electricity (griha jyoti) to all households; Monthly assistance of Rs 2,000 to the female head of each household (Griha Lakshmi); 10 kg rice free to each member of BPL family (Anna Bhagya); Rs 3,000 per month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the 18-25 age group) for two years (Yuva Nidhi) and free travel for women in public transport buses (Uthik Prayan).
Addressing a press briefing here after the cabinet meeting, Siddaramaiah said the implementation (guaranteed about 200 units of free power) would begin from July 1. “A total of 200 units of electricity will be free. Consumers who have not paid. Their bills till July will have to be paid,” he said.
The Griha Lakshmi scheme, which promises Rs 2,000 per month to each female ‘karta’ of a family, will be implemented from August 15, the CM said. The online application will be open from 15th June to 15th July. Beneficiaries will have to submit Aadhaar card and bank account details “June 15-July 15 Aadhaar card and application will be submitted. Then from July 15 to August 15 after analyzing bank accounts,” he said.
The Congress cabinet in the state touched its full strength of 34 on May 27 after inducting 24 more ministers into the cabinet. The Karnataka cabinet was expanded after the chief minister and Shivakumar held consultations with the party’s central leadership.
On 20 May, Siddaramaiah was sworn in as Chief Minister with DK Shivakumar sworn in as his deputy. Subsequently, the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah issued orders to implement the five guarantees given by the party before the elections.
