New Delhi: An important meeting took place between top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur at their residence on Wednesday. Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik have placed five demands in front of Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. Their requests include the appointment of a woman chief for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and withdrawal of the police FIR lodged against her. Wrestlers are demanding a probe and arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually abusing upcoming wrestlers, including a minor.
The wrestlers, who have been stressing on the need for a woman leader, are reportedly demanding open and fair elections within the WFI. Additionally, they have stated that they are against Brij Bhushan Singh or any of his family members participating in the federation. The wrestlers have once again demanded the custody of Brij Bhushan Singh.
Wrestlers Protest: 5 demands of protesting wrestlers
1. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) should be headed by a woman, wrestlers have urged.
2. No one from Brij Bhushan Singh and his family should be a part of the Wrestling Federation.
3. The protesting wrestlers have demanded “free and fair” elections for the wrestling body, whose leadership has been accused of corruption and poor governance.
4. The wrestlers have also asked for quashing of the FIR registered against them for allegedly breaking law and order in connection with the fight at Jantar Mantar on April 28.
5. The wrestlers reiterated their demand for the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment.
Earlier, the farmers’ body Bharatiya Kisan Union, which came out in support of the wrestlers, called off its June 9 protest after the athletes met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday.
Why the opposition to the wrestlers?
The wrestlers are protesting demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for allegedly sexually assaulting seven female wrestlers, including a minor. Two FIRs have been registered against Brij Bhushan so far and a case has been registered against him under the POCSO Act.
