A cosmic visitor has just arrived in the lush green environs of Earth.
On Saturday night, a meteor flashed through the atmosphere, exploded and descended to Earth with a huge bang, temporarily lighting up the sky over northern Queensland.
Dashcams, doorbell cameras and mobile phones, among other devices, captured the moment the space rock arrived and cast a dazzling greenish-blue glow across the night sky.
Far North Queenslanders have witnessed something extraordinary last night.

Tamara Davies, an astrophysicist and professor at the University of Queensland, told Brisbane Times that it could be a “Wicked” Meteor, meaning no one was expecting it.
The meteorite may have fragmented into smaller pieces by the time it hit the ground, but it is not believed to have been large enough to leave a crater on Earth. Although meteors are frequently observed, it is unusual to see one over a populated area.
According to Brad Tucker of the Australian National University (ANU), the meteorite was probably traveling between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometers per hour and was between half a meter and a meter in size.
