story of success: Madhur Rakheja, who hails from Haryana, turned down several job offers before accepting a huge salary with the organization of his choice. Rakheja is a native of Ambala Cantonment and is the son of a shopkeeper and a homemaker. He obtained his engineering degree from the prestigious University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun. Microsoft, the tech-powerhouse founded by Bill Gates, hired Madhur at a whopping salary of Rs. 50 lakhs annually. As a result he became the talk of the town. This was even more notable because, prior to the key appointment, he had turned down significant offers from organizations such as Cognizant, Optum, and Amazon.
Madhur Rakheja: Background
Rakheja attended Major RN Kapoor DAV Public School and SD Vidya School for her education. In 2018, he joined UPES to pursue a degree in Computer Science Engineering. His focus was on informatics for the oil and gas industry. He worked as a software development engineer (internship) at FameSoftware throughout his time in college and later worked at e-commerce giant Amazon. He decided to specialize in technology because he has always been interested in it. As a result, the lives of millions of people can be affected and changed. He wanted to participate in such an important endeavor. Despite some advice, he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to pursue a career in upstream petroleum engineering. But he was certain that he wanted to pursue a career in computer technology.
Appreciation of UPES
Madhur had praised UPES in an interview for offering ‘excellent’ placement prospects to its students. Madhur had a list of firms he wanted to work with during the campus placements. Apart from Microsoft, he has also submitted applications to Infosys, Amazon, Cognizant, DE Shaw and Optum. Three of them, Optum, Amazon and Microsoft made him generous offers. According to his LinkedIn profile, Madhur has been a full-time employee of Microsoft since August 2022. He is a software engineer on the Outlook team. He is developing ‘Outlook Lite’, a version of the email client for cellphones with less processing power. His current home is Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka.
Why Microsoft?
Besides Microsoft, Madhur submitted applications to firms both on and off campus, including DE Shaw, Optum, Cognizant and Infosys. He received job offers for full-time positions from Cognizant, Microsoft, and Optum, as well as internship offers from Amazon as part of campus placements. Based on how well he performed during the internship, he was also offered a full-time SDE position at Amazon. But why did Madhur choose Microsoft out of all the job offers he got? Rakheja said that this choice was made for several reasons. They claim that Microsoft’s working hours are flexible. There workplace culture is very positive. The engineers working there do a great job. The company takes great care of its employees. At Microsoft, employees can easily pursue their interests and hobbies. Madhur mentioned several additional features of Microsoft.
Getting huge pay packages from global leaders like Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Google makes national news. These stories not only highlight the hard work of the students but also the hopes and pride of their parents. With a similar story is Madhur Rakheja, a B-Tech student from Ambala Cantonment, Haryana.
