New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the speaker’s chair in the new Parliament House, after offering prayers. The historic ‘Sengol’ was handed over to PM Modi by Adhinams before it was installed in the new Parliament House. PM Modi decided to adopt Sengol as the national symbol of Amrit Kaal.
This is the same Sengol which was accepted by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at his residence on the night of 14 August in the presence of several leaders. The ceremony began with a traditional ‘puja’ as per Vedic rituals, which would last for an hour. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present with PM Modi during the puja.
The inauguration will happen in two phases. The puja was held in a pandal (terrace) near the Gandhi statue in Parliament. After the puja, the dignitaries will inspect the premises of the Lok Sabha chamber and the Rajya Sabha chamber in the new building.
The morning phase will end around 9:30 am, after which the second phase of the ceremony is expected to begin in the afternoon with the singing of the national anthem in the Lok Sabha chamber in the presence of all the dignitaries, including PM Modi. At 11:30 am, all invitees including Members of Parliament, Speaker of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Speaker and other distinguished guests are expected to be seated in the Lok Sabha chamber in the new building.
During this phase, a speech will be delivered by Deputy Rajya Sabha Chairman, Harivansh, who will read a written congratulatory message from Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar. On this occasion, the written message of President Draupadi Murmu will also be read out. The current building of Parliament was completed in 1927, and is now about 100 years old. Lack of space was being experienced in this building as per the present requirements. There was also a lack of comfortable seating arrangements for the MPs in both the Houses, which was affecting the efficiency of the members.
Keeping the above in mind, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament. As a result, on 10 December 2020, the foundation stone for the new building of Parliament was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The newly constructed Parliament House has been completed in record time with quality construction.
Now the newly constructed building of Parliament, which will serve to further enrich India’s glorious democratic traditions and constitutional values, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that will help the members to perform their functions better. 888 members will be able to sit in the Lok Sabha from the new Parliament House. The present building of the Parliament has a provision of seating for 543 members in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha.
Keeping in mind the requirements of the future, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both the Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber.
