The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai or Chepauk witnessed emotional scenes on Sunday night as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) played their final home league game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Even though the four-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders’ match no. 61, Captain MS Dhoni took the entire CSK squad for a lap around the Chepauk Stadium after the game to thank the spectators for their overwhelming support during the season.
One wondered if this is the last time legendary skipper MS Dhoni is playing in front of the Chepauk crowd as it is still not certain whether he will return to lead the team for the 2024 season. Even former India captain Sunil Gavaskar enjoyed the occasion and asked Dhoni for a special autograph.
In a video that went viral on social media, Dhoni was seen giving Gavaskar an autograph on his shirt. While Qualifier 1 and Eliminator are set to take place at the venue, CSK are yet to confirm a playoff berth after losing to KKR on Sunday night.

Gavaskar later revealed that he had borrowed a pen after the match when he learned about CSK’s plans for a lap of honour. The legendary India opener praised Dhoni for his contribution to Indian cricket.
“Who doesn’t love him? What he has done for Indian cricket over the years is amazing. What is most important is his role model. So many youngsters look up to him. Thank you very much, I borrowed a pen As soon as I heard they were going to go on the lap, I held it close to me,” he said on Star Sports Network.
Meanwhile, Dhoni managed an unbeaten 2 in his last home league match at Chepauk as CSK were bundled out for 144 for 6 after electing to bat. However, Dhoni blamed the dew for affecting the efficiency of CSK bowlers and believed that the side needed to score more than 180 runs to have a chance in the match.
“The minute we bowled the first ball in the second innings, we knew we needed 180. But we couldn’t get 180 on that pitch. The dew made a big difference in the second innings. We didn’t really want any of our bowlers. Can’t blame it. Just the circumstances had a big impact on the game,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.
