UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will travel to Washington next week for a meeting with US President Joe Biden – but will make no attempt to forge a bilateral trade deal.
Downing Street announced the visit on Tuesday, saying it would be a chance for the two countries to enhance their “co-operation and co-ordination” on issues including securing supply chains and transitioning to zero carbon.
“It will also be an opportunity to discuss issues including maintaining our support for Ukraine as we build on the success of our G7 summit ahead of the NATO summit in July.”
A spokesman for Number 10 said the UK was no longer seeking a trade deal with the US.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the two would discuss “continuing efforts to strengthen our economic ties” and that they would also “review developments in Northern Ireland”.
