The Netherlands football team has suffered a major blow as defender Matthijs de Ligt has been ruled out of the squad due to a calf injury.
The Netherlands are going to face Croatia in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League on Thursday. During a practice session for the upcoming semi-final clash, 23-year-old Matthijs de Ligt suffered a calf injury.
Daley Blind has now been called up to replace De Ligt in coach Ronald Koeman’s squad.
According to Bayern Munich’s official website, “As the Dutch FA, the KNVB confirmed on Monday, the 23-year-old suffered a calf injury during preparation for the semi-final against Croatia.”
Matthijs de Light previously played for Ajax and Juventus before joining Bayern Munich. He played 117 matches for Dutch club Ajax, scoring 13 goals and giving seven assists.
For Italian club, Juventus, Matthijs de Ligt played 117 matches, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. For German club Bayern Munich, the 23-year-old has made 43 appearances scoring three goals and giving one assist. He was named the Netherlands’ Footballer of the Year in 2019.
Matthijs de Ligt won the Italian Serie A title with Juventus in the 2019/20 season. Later in 20/21, he won the Italian Super Cup and the Italian Cup with Juventus. Matthijs de Ligt, recently came away with silverware Bayern Munich when they were crowned as Bundesliga champions.
