Looks like Instagram’s new Threads app could be a hit. Mark Zuckerberg said there are over 30 million signups on the app by thursday morning, and the people who are investigating this are posting… er, threading… doing a lot too. According to internal data I’ve seen, users have already posted more than 95 million threads (or tweets, depending on who you ask) and racked up nearly 190 million likes.
All this has happened in less than 24 hours. The app launched on iOS and Android on Wednesday evening (much earlier than the original Thursday launch time), and Very Many people are checking it out; It is currently the top free app on the App Store.
There’s still a lot missing in Threads. For example, you can’t delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account, and the app doesn’t have features like DMs, reverse-chronological following feeds, or planned integration with the decentralized ActivityPub protocol. But these launch numbers point to a promising start for Meta’s new Twitter competitor — now, we’ll have to wait and see if people stick around.
