The cryptocurrency industry has been massively affected by advances in artificial intelligence technology. More specifically, the growing polarity of AI-based chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Bard has given rise to a subsection of cryptocurrencies themed around that area.

The growing interest in AI has led to a myriad of coins in the market that have seen exponential growth.

We’ve also tapped ChatGPT on a number of topics, such as:

And while it’s exciting to chat with AI about topics you’d normally discuss with your fellow mates, there’s a flip side, and Geoffrey Hinton speaks loud and clear about it.

godfather of artificial intelligence

Geoffrey Hinton is a British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist born in 1947 in Wimbledon, London.

He is best known for his work on artificial neural networks and is a former Google employee. He left the company in May 2023 in a major public exit, voicing public concerns about the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Hinton is the first winner of the Rumelhart Prize in 2001 and is internationally renowned for his work on artificial neural nets, particularly with regard to how they can be designed to learn without the need for a human teacher. He also won the 2018 ACM AM Turing Award for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs in the field.

He is also commonly referred to as one of the godfathers of AI. And now, he has some concerns.

We’ve Discovered The Secret To Immortality, But There’s A Catch

in one Interview For Guardian, Hinton made it clear that he had left Google on good terms and that he had no objection to what the company is doing or has done.

In the article, he compares biological intelligence (the human brain) with digital intelligence, underlining the inefficiencies faced by people. They say that our brains run on less power, but our vision is quite inefficient in terms of information transfer. On the other hand, Digital Intelligence is different.

You pay a huge cost in energy, but when one of them learns something, they all know it, and you can easily store more copies. So the good news is that we have discovered the secret of immortality. Bad news, it’s not for us.

In short, Hinton came to the conclusion that humans are building intelligence that has the potential to surpass humanity.

I thought it would happen eventually, but we’ve had a long time: 30 to 50 years. I don’t think so anymore. And I don’t know of any examples of more intelligent things being controlled by less intelligent things.

To make the comparison more perceptive, the computer scientist pins us (humans) against the frogs and adds:

And it (AI) is going to learn from the web, it’s going to read every single book that’s ever been written about manipulating people, and see it in practice.

fear for humanity

Report citing Hinton’s recent report outline Potential dangers of so-called superintelligence.

The Godfathers of AI outline scenarios where an AI can gain control over multiple aspects of its environment in an attempt to solve complex problems. These aspects also include human manipulation. The scientist believes that AI would not even need an explicit goal of gaining power or destruction in order to take advantage of its ability to mimic human behavior.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. He believes there are ways to mitigate catastrophic scenarios, but he is also Opinion That we have passed the point of no return and that it is absolutely impossible to stop the development of AI, nor should it be stopped.

I think we should keep developing it because it can do amazing things. But we must put equal effort into minimizing or preventing potentially bad consequences.

How close are we to those bad results? Closer than you can imagine.

I’ve got huge uncertainty at present. It’s possible that the big language models, after consuming all the documents on the web, won’t be able to go much further until they have access to all of our private data. I don’t want to dismiss such things – I think people who are convinced of this position are crazy.

The correct way to think about the probability of a disaster is like tossing a simple coin as many times as we want.

closing thoughts

Artificial intelligence is likely to play an increasing role in our lives. In fact, according to ChatGPT (oh, the irony), here are some of the sectors it will impact over the next 7 years:

  • Health care
  • automation
  • transportation
  • Education
  • smart homes
  • customer service

Since voicing his concerns, Hinton has come under fire from many for not following up on some of his colleagues who had left earlier. It is easy to reach that conclusion, but it is also easy to overlook the complexity of the problem, which touches on many technical, philosophical and ethical principles.

I think all Hinton is trying to say is that AI’s impact on humanity, whether good or bad, is likely to be much closer than most of us think.
