Climate change is more real than ever. Whether it’s the carbon footprint or all the other man-made puzzles we’ve imposed on the planet, ecosystem restoration is no longer an option. This is the need of the hour. And today, on World Environment Day, it is important that we add to this dialogue and acknowledge every contributing factor that is working towards making our home, our Earth, a more livable place for generations to come.
Because there is no space left. From Antarctica to India, every corner of the world is feeling the heat of climate change. In the motherland, mangroves are under serious threat in the state of Odisha. Mangroves can be found in the inter-tidal areas at river mouths in Odisha and are important in protecting the hinterland from cyclones and ingress of sea water during tidal waves.
Owing to its distinctive topography and variable climate, Odisha is frequently affected by cyclones. Mangroves were previously abundant in this coastal region, but over time, due to various reasons, their numbers have steadily decreased.
To save these shrubs, Signature Packaged Drinking Water has given rise to the “Mangrove Regeneration Project”, an initiative to restore mangrove plantations in Odisha and restore the fragile ecological balance of coastal areas for climate resilience.
As the livelihood of the population depends on the sea and its surrounding environment, regeneration of mangroves is essential. Mangroves can absorb carbon dioxide 2–4 times more rapidly than a mature tropical forest, mangrove regeneration can be a very successful technology to combat climate change.
Ruchira Jaitley, Executive Vice President and Head of Portfolio Marketing, Diageo India, said, Mangrove regeneration project has been launched in Odisha to build coastal climate resilience. Signature Packaged Drinking Water believes in living well while doing good. We want to give our consumers the chance to celebrate life every day, everywhere, while engaging with actions that are making a ‘sea change’ for the planet as a whole, for flora and fauna, for local communities.
He added, “Mangroves are a natural barrier that prevents erosion, prevents flooding, helps offset carbon and enhances food security. We partner with local communities in Odisha to do good for nature Committed to doing.”
On Mashable Mornings, Jaitley even said, “We really want to be a green brand. We want to save water, reduce our carbon footprint and save the climate. These are our goals.
The Mangrove Project is unique in that it begins with five villages and is an ambitious three-year commitment. and will work to strengthen neighborhood communities, reduce carbon footprint and make a significant impact. Signature has made it a point to preserve the environment through its operations, driving a meaningful difference and keeping in mind the belief of “Living well while doing good is good for the planet.”
