The much-anticipated final of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) suffered an unfortunate turn as incessant rain in Ahmedabad forced the match to be washed out on Sunday. The clash between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings was later rescheduled for the reserve day on Monday. However, with forecasts predicting rain even on the reserve day, concerns arose about the possible outcome if the match was once again affected by inclement weather.

The weather conditions in Ahmedabad had been unfavorable in the recent past. Friday’s Qualifier 2 between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians was delayed due to rain but the match went ahead thanks to the efforts of the groundsmen and super sopers. However, Sunday’s rain proved incessant, preventing a packed Narendra Modi Stadium from witnessing the final performance.

Despite a brief respite at 9:00 pm IST, when the rain stopped and the covers were removed, hopes of a match soon faded as the rain returned. Puddles formed on the covers and exposed areas of the outfield, making it impossible to proceed with the game.
The Reserve Day forecast includes a forecast for a thunderstorm around 5 PM IST, which is expected to last for about an hour. However, rain is not expected during the opening hours of the match, which means a full 20-over match is likely.

The cut-off time rules on the reserve day will remain the same as on Sunday. If the match’s overs are reduced, the contest of five overs per side can be played as late as 12:06 AM IST. In the event of further restrictions, the Super Over will be used to determine the winner, provided the outfield and pitch are ready by 1:20 AM IST.
In the unfortunate event that no play is possible on the Reserve Day, the team that finishes higher on the points table at the end of the league stage will be declared the winner. With Gujarat Titans securing the top spot after the completion of the 70-match league stage, they will look to claim the IPL trophy ahead of second-placed Chennai Super Kings.
As cricket fans eagerly await the result and final verdict of the season, all eyes will be on the sky and the efforts of the groundsmen to ensure a fitting conclusion to the IPL 2023 season.
