In a recent revelation, Rinku Singh highlighted his conversation with MS Dhoni during IPL 2023 and revealed the valuable batting advice given by the Chennai Super Kings skipper. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the Indian men’s team for the Asian Games to be held in September-October this year. As the primary team was preparing for the domestic ODI World Cup during that period, the BCCI fielded a young, second-string team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad for the multi-sport tournament. While most of the players had already represented India at the senior level, some newcomers including Rinku Singh got their first international call-up for the Games.

Rinku Singh made a mark with his exceptional performance for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2023 Indian Premier League. His extraordinary innings against Gujarat Titans in the group stage has now gone down in IPL history. During that match, left-handed batsman Rinku hit five sixes off the remaining five balls against Yash Dayal when the Knight Riders needed 28 runs to win. Riding on the momentum gained from that miraculous goal, Rinku finished the season with an impressive 474 runs in 14 matches, with a strike rate close to 150.

“Everyone dreams of playing for India, wearing that jersey. I don’t think much about the future because the more you think, the more you burden yourself. I take life as one day at a time. But yes, everyone who takes up sports professionally wants to represent their country one day or the other,” Rinku told Revsportz.

“I know for a fact that my family, my parents will be more than happy to see me wearing the Indian jersey. They have been waiting for this for years. They have seen my struggle, they have helped me, they have been with me through my ups and downs. The day I wear the jersey will be dedicated to him.

There was speculation that Rinku could be called up for the T20I series against the West Indies next month. However, the BCCI surprised the Uttar Pradesh batsman by including him in the squad for the Asian Games for the first time. Expressing his happiness at finally being named in the Indian team, Rinku said that he always aspired to “represent the country” from the time he picked up the cricket bat.

“The chat with Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) was really useful. He bats at the same numbers as me – at 5 or 6 – and has done so for most of his career, and has been able to adapt to inside and outside positions. I just asked him how I could improve my game, and his advice was very simple: “Bahut sahi batti kar raha hai, jo tu kar raha hai, wahi karta raha (You are batting really well). Continue with what you have been doing so far),” said Rinku.
