Since Mahakaushal and Vindhya regions were left out of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, the party has decided to launch its election campaign from Jabalpur, which holds significance due to its substantial tribal voter population. In the last assembly elections held in 2018, the Congress had won 11 of the 13 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the eight-district division.

The success of the Congress in Mahakaushal during the 2018 elections enabled them to form a government in Madhya Pradesh with Kamal Nath as the chief minister. However, the government fell in March 2020 when MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia crossed over to the BJP.
