If you’re using the new macOS Sonoma beta, you might want to know about an awesome new bridge between the ecosystems that lets Mac Chrome users connect with their iCloud passwords. Apple has updated it iCloud Password Chrome Extension With a new feature that lets you pull passwords directly from iCloud, so you don’t need to open Safari or transfer your iCloud passwords to another password manager.
Apple Software Engineering Manager Ricky Mondello Tweeted about the new feature Tomorrow. Mondello pointed out that the Chrome extension can also autofill passwords and one-time codes, save new passwords, and lets you right-click a QR code to set up a code generator.
The Chrome extension is the same one designed to enable iCloud password syncing in Windows, though at the time of publication, the Chrome Store listing makes no reference to the new capabilities for Mac Chrome users. Besides Chrome, the extension works with other Chromium-based browsers including Arch and Microsoft Edge, though the latter will get autofill features.
Although the updated Chrome extension does not work directly with Passkey, Mondello explains iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma have support for Save and Sign in with Passkeys across the OS — though developers will need to implement this in their apps.
If you want to try out the new feature, you’ll need to install the new macOS Sonoma public beta. Beware that you may run into bugs, so make sure the Mac you’re using isn’t mission-critical.
