A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon. In the year 2023, two lunar and two solar eclipses are going to happen. A solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse have already occurred, and the other two are due at the end of the year. The second lunar eclipse will take place on 29 October. According to Drik Panchang, this lunar eclipse will begin at 1:06 am on October 29 and end at 2:22 am. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon appears black and can be red or orange in color. This is because some of the Earth’s atmosphere refracts or bends the Sun’s light around the Earth and onto the Moon, giving a reddish appearance.

Rahu and Ketu are generally considered inauspicious planets in astrology. It is believed that Rahu’s biggest enemies are the Sun and the Moon and he swallows them from time to time, causing solar and lunar eclipses. It is believed that the Sun and Moon deities suffer during an eclipse and hence eclipse is considered an inauspicious event in Hinduism. It is advised to take several precautions during the eclipse and also during the Sutak period.
Meanwhile, the first lunar eclipse of the year took place on May 5, 2023. What made it special was that it passed through Earth’s umbra, which was slightly different, blurring the northern part of the Moon’s disk.
