Lord Hanuman is the official mascot of the Asian Athletics Championships which is being held in Bangkok from July 12 to July 16. The event marks the 50th anniversary of the Asian Athletics Association. While revealing the mascot, the organization explained the reason behind choosing Lord Hanuman as the mascot. The Asian Athletics Association explains on its website, “Since Hanuman exhibits extraordinary abilities including speed, strength, courage and intelligence in the service of (the god) Rama…Hanuman’s greatest ability is, in fact, his incredibly tenacious Loyalty and devotion.”
The association further wrote that the logo of the championship reflects the teamwork skills of the athletes participating in the games. “The logo of the 25th Asian Athletics Championships 2023 depicts the athletes participating in the Games, the skill, the teamwork of the athletes, the athleticism, the dedication and the display of sportsmanship.”

‘Lord Hanuman’ as the mascot has received a mixed response from fans in India. Some people are welcoming the move while others are considering it as an insult to God. An Instagram user wrote that God has been turned into a ‘cartoon’. While others said it was great to see Thailand honoring Hindu deities. There were also those who said that Thailand has shown more respect towards Hindu deities than the movie ‘Adipurush’.

India are fielding a strong contingent at the Asian Athletics Championships which includes shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and long jumper Murali Sreesankar. All eyes will also be on Tejaswin Shankar, who will compete in the decathlon event. Among the women, Jyoti Yaraji (200m/100m hurdles) and Annu Rani (javelin throw) are medal contenders.
