Yashasvi Jaiswal half-pulls and half-sweeps the ball towards square leg, takes a single, waves his arms and breaks into thunderous applause as he becomes the 17th Indian player to score a century on Test debut. Jaiswal started the second day of the first Test against the West Indies on 40 and was unbeaten at stumps after struggling throughout the day. The 21-year-old left-handed opener slowly picked up the pace after the lunch break on the second day and eventually reached his century. Jaiswal’s century made him the 17th Indian cricketer to achieve the feat on his Test debut, with the most recent century being scored by Shreyas Iyer against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021.
At the other end, Team India captain Rohit Sharma also completed his 10th Test century. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal became the third Indian opener to score a century on his Test debut, after Shikhar Dhawan (187 against Australia in 2013) and Prithvi Shaw (134 against West Indies in 2018).
Despite having played only 15 first-class matches in his career prior to this Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal quickly found a place in the Indian team. He has a tremendous hunger to score runs, which can be gauged from his impressive average of over 80, including nine hundreds in first-class cricket. Notably, he scored a remarkable 265 in the second innings of the Duleep Trophy final last year.
