Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane has been promoted to the position of vice-captain of the Indian Test team for the two-match Test series against the West Indies, starting on Wednesday at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. After Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped for the series in the West Indies, Rahane on Monday indicated that Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal could make his Test debut on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Jaiswal has an impressive first-class average of 80.21 in his short first-class career. He has scored 1,845 runs in 18 first class matches with 9 centuries and 2 fifties. In IPL 2023, Jaiswal scored 625 runs in 14 matches with 1 century and 5 fifties.
“Definitely, there is an opportunity for someone who will play in place of Pujara. This is a great opportunity for that person to perform well. I am not sure who will play at number three, but whoever plays, I am sure he will do well. I think all of us players are very experienced, they have done well and are batting well at the moment,” Rahane said at Windsor Park ahead of the first Test.

During the two-day warm-up match, Jaiswal scored a half-century while opening with skipper Rohit Sharma. It is still not clear whether the left-handed batsman will open or bat at number three. Rahane, however, feels Jaiswal just needs to express himself and not think much about international cricket.
“First of all, I am really happy for him (Jaiswal). He really is an exciting talent. He has performed brilliantly in domestic cricket for Mumbai and then in IPL for Rajasthan Royals. The most important thing is the way he is batting with the red ball. He did well in the Duleep Trophy last year. His numbers are really good. My message to him would be just express your batting, don’t think too much about international cricket. It’s all about playing our game in the middle,” Rahane said.

He said, “The way he is batting, there is no need to think much about international cricket. It’s all about playing your game with the freedom in the middle that’s important. Personally, I am very happy for him,” said the Team India vice-captain.
India will begin their two-match Test series in Dominica this week while the second Test will be held in Port of Spain, Trinidad from next week.
