The notified regulations stipulate that pan masala should carry a warning statement “Chewing pan masala is injurious to health” and the warning statement should cover 50% of the pack on the front of the label.
These rules were effective from May 1, 2023.
The regulation also stipulates that this warning statement should be clearly legible/audible in advertisements relating to pan masala.
Meanwhile, FSSAI has said that the decision to extend the deadline was taken after considering the representations made by the stakeholders to the food authority.
“It has been decided to defer the enforcement of the note in Schedule II of the FSS (Labelling and Display) Second Amendment Regulations, 2022: ‘The warning statement should cover 50% of the front of the label’. for a period of three months from the date of enforcement, i.e. 1st May 2023,” the order reads.
The FSSAI statement said the stakeholders in the representation had asked the food authority for an extension to phase out the packaging material carrying the existing warning and to introduce new packaging material with the new guidelines.
