Paris: Bernarda Pera could not win a single game on her serve on Monday as she crashed out in straight sets in the fourth round of the French Open 2023. Lost 6-3, 6-1. Jaboor won 15 of 16 points on Pera’s second serve.
Jaber, who finished runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time in her career. Jabeur also struggled with his serve but managed to save eight of his 12 break points.
“He put a lot of pressure on my serve,” Jabur said. “I’m glad I was able to win my service games when I needed to. … Hopefully, I will come back well and serve better in my next match.

Pera looked frustrated and tried to cut the rallies short, but the tactic did not work. He made a total of 33 unforced errors. After coming back from a calf injury that hampered her preparations for the tournament, Jabeur became the first Tunisian and Arab woman ever to progress at the French Open. She is the first African woman to reach the last eight at Roland Garros since Amanda Coetzer of South Africa reached the semi-finals in 1997.
Jabeur will next face another first-time quarterfinalist in Paris – 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who won over Sara Sorribes Tormo after a nearly four-hour marathon. Haddad Maia defeated his Spanish opponent 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5 in a match that included 16 service breaks in windy conditions. She became the first Brazilian woman to reach the quarterfinals of a major since Maria Bueno reached the semifinals of the 1968 US Open.
Sorribes Tormo had progressed to the fourth round on a walkover after reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina withdrew with an illness. She remains in the doubles draw with Czech partner Marie Bouzkova. The pair carried on on Sunday when their opponents were forced to abandon a match after Miyu Kato accidentally hit the ball girl on the neck after a point.
Later on Monday, No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek will face Lesia Tsurenko on Court Susanne Lenglen, while No. 6 Coco Gauff will take on Anna Karolina Schmidlova. A year ago, Swiatek beat Gauff in the final of a clay-court Grand Slam tournament and if they both win their fourth-round matches, they will meet in the quarterfinals this week.
