Former cricketer draws parallels between Shubman Gill and Sachin; Takes a dig at Kohli’s troubled 2014 England tour

The rise of young sensation Shubman Gill has triggered a heated discussion as to who reigns supreme between the two legends of cricket, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Gill’s remarkable performances this year, which include multiple centuries in international matches and a record-breaking double century in ODIs, as well as his outstanding performance in the IPL 2023 season, have catapulted him into the limelight and fueled debate.

As the cricketing world joins the conversation around Gill’s potential, an Indian cricket great drew parallels between Gill and Tendulkar while taking a dig at Kohli’s struggles during the 2014 tour of England.

During Gill’s stupendous century innings for India across formats earlier this year, many hailed him as the rightful successor to Kohli. However, his explosive form in IPL 2023, where he came close to surpassing Kohli’s iconic 2016 tally with 890 runs in 17 innings, which earned him the Orange Cap, has also drawn comparisons with Tendulkar.

In an interview with Sportskeeda, Mohammad Kaif expressed his belief that Gill’s batting style resembles Tendulkar’s flawless technique more than Kohli, whom he claimed still has “weaknesses”. Kaif highlighted Kohli’s struggles during the 2014 England series as proof.

Kaif remarked that Sachin Tendulkar was an ‘organised’ batsman while Virat Kohli has some ‘weaknesses’. The former cricketer further said that the former Indian skipper, who has 75 centuries to his credit in international cricket, struggled against James Anderson in 2014 and was a ‘total flop’.

Furthermore, Kaif said that Shubman Gill’s technique is similar to that of Sachin Tendulkar, which is why bowlers find it difficult to get him out during matches.

Kaif further expressed confidence in Gill’s ability, saying that the IPL 2023 Orange Cap winner is well on his way to becoming as great as Sachin Tendulkar.

At just 23, Gill finds himself in London, preparing for the biggest match of his career so far, the World Test Championship final against Australia. With centuries in the Border-Gavaskar series in March and his maiden Test century against Bangladesh in November, Gill looks set to make a significant impact in the upcoming competition, showcasing his exceptional technique and mental toughness reminiscent of Tendulkar .
