New Delhi: Cyclone Biparjoy on Tuesday weakened from a very severe cyclone to a very severe cyclone. Union Home Minister Amit Shah today chaired a review meeting on preparedness for Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’. Earlier on Monday, PM Narendra Modi had a meeting to deal with the extremely severe cyclone.
Cyclone Biparjoy’s impact and affected areas
The IMD says that Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat will be worst affected by Cyclone Biparjoy. 21,000 boats have been brought ashore. A list of villages at risk for evacuation has been drawn up. Their details have been collected to take the saltpan workers to a safer place. Adequate shelter, electricity, medicine and emergency services are ready. 10 SDRF teams are being sent.
NDRF has sent 12 teams and three more are ready in Gujarat. In addition, 15 teams have been alerted for airlifting at Arrakonam (Tamil Nadu), Mundli (Odisha) and Bathinda (Punjab). Coast Guard, Army and Navy teams are on standby along with ships and aircraft.
Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard teams and resources are helping Gujarat prepare, rescue and restore. Maritime Board and stakeholders are receiving regular alerts and advisories from DG, Shipping.
Offshore oil fields are being monitored and offshore installations in Gujarat have been asked to bring back all manpower. Kandla and Mundra ports have been warned and other ports have been advised to take preventive action.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said the Center has set up shelter homes with arrangements for food and ration and prepared an action plan for medical and health emergencies.
He said that all port staff in the coastal areas have been evacuated, ships put to rest and crew members taken to safer places.
News agency PTI quoted Mandaviya as saying, “Ports are among the worst-hit infrastructure during the cyclone, so all port staff have been shifted for their safety, ships anchored and crew members quarantined.” have been taken to safer places.”
Past Cyclones in the Arabian Sea
The Extremely Severe Cyclone Kyarr of 2019 over the Arabian Sea lasted for nine days and 15 hours. It formed over east-central Arabian Sea, changed direction several times and weakened over southwest Arabian Sea.
The extremely severe cyclonic storm of 2018 Gaja over southeast Bay of Bengal lasted for nine days and 15 hours. The IMD said that it crossed the southern peninsular region into the Arabian Sea and weakened there.
Scientists say that due to climate change, cyclonic storms in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea have become stronger and longer.
