Coventry City and Luton Town may not be the two biggest clubs in world football, but all eyes will be on them for the EFL Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The winner would be promoted to the Premier League, becoming the third team after Burnley and Sheffield United to secure promotion.
In addition to promotion to the Premier League, the play-off final is considered the ‘richest’ game in football, with the winner expected to receive massive financial incentives.
According to financial firm Deloitte, this could be anywhere between £135 million to £265 million in the next 3-5 years, depending on how the team performs in the top league. (Manchester United confirm Champions League return with 4-1 win over Chelsea, see)
Luton Town have made their way out of non-league football and their home ground at Kenilworth Road will need to be refurbished to be fit for the Premier League. Coventry City, on the other hand, were inaugural members when the Premier League was introduced in 1992/93, but are the closest they have come to returning to the top flight, after being relegated in the 2000/01 season.
Both teams have experienced remarkable journeys, having climbed the football pyramid after an intense battle in League Two during the 2017–18 season and now find themselves on the verge of achieving Premier League dreams.
Luton Town finished third in the Championship and then, after losing the first leg 2–1, came back to beat Sunderland 3–2.
Coventry finished fifth in the league, and fought back in the playoffs to a 1–0 aggregate victory over Middlesbrough.
