Music knows no boundaries and this has been proven time and time again. After K-Wave, it seems Punjabi music is taking the world by storm not only in the west. Recently, Diljit Dosanjh became the first Punjabi singer to perform at an international festival like Coachella. And now a Spotify report based on Spotify’s wrapped data has revealed that the Punjabi music genre was one of the most played genres on the music streaming platform.

Back in 2022, Spotify reported that out of the top 10 spots, Music by AP Dhillon, Intense and Gurinder Gill was one of the most streamed singles, and Mousetape, by the late Sidhu Moose Wala, was the most streamed album . Rahul Balyan, Head of Music, Spotify India, said, “Punjabi is one of the most streamed music languages on Spotify in India today. Playlists such as Punjabi 101 and Hot Hits Punjabi have emerged as the preferred destination for listeners to discover the best and biggest hits in the language.
Since 2021, Diljit Dosanjh’s songs have topped the Spotify charts thrice with songs like GOAT, Clash and Lover. This genre too has seen a similar growth in the past few years. The report revealed that the consumption of his songs has seen an increase of over 60% in Canada and over 50% in the US. Meanwhile, the overall growth of the genre and their songs in the rest of the world has been over 90%.
Rahul Balyan said, “The genre of Punjabi pop is growing rapidly across the globe through the Indian diaspora. Global recognition for Punjabi artists has been achieved recently at Diljit Dosanjh’s Coachella, the first for any Punjabi artist and AP Dhillon’s Evident from the performance. The performance at the Juno Awards earlier this year.”
The demand seems to have grown so much that Spotify collaborated with Punjabi artists to release three original singles including Maan Punjabi by Tarsem Jassar, Raanjha by Nimrat Khaira, and Chhalla by Gurdas Maan and Diljit Dosanjh.

Recently Punjabi singer Ikki aka Iqvinder Singh, who has worked with Diljit Dosanjh on singles like Chaalak and Chhalla, talked about the rise of the Punjabi song genre. He added, “With the likes of Karan Aujla, Sidhu Moosewala, Diljit Dosanjh, and AP Dhillon, Bhasha is forging its own unique international path. I’ve managed to grow a slow and steady fan base, so I can represent voices like Stay new to what is possible and let their favorite artists be heard through it.”
Talking about working with Diljit in the recently released Chhalla, Ikki said, “Diljit brought me into the industry at a time when education was my only focus” but it is working with the singer/actor which gave him enough confidence to work on the music.
“This was before my first big cut, Diamond, was released. Years later, he kept in touch, brought me the right opportunities, taught me the ways of the industry, and made me want to tap with him every time I went up. allows. He remains Ikki’s big brother and backbone. The ring is the result of his trust in me.” Ikki added.
He concluded by saying that Punjab music will climb higher on the charts in the future. “Over time, more listeners are tuning in as the world pays attention to what is happening in India and its diaspora,” he added.
