Imphal: As part of the ongoing efforts to end the unrest and restore normalcy in violence-hit Manipur, the Center on Thursday appointed Rajeev Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, as the new Director General of Police (DGP). North-Eastern States.

Over 80 killed in caste violence in Manipur
Manipur has witnessed ethnic violence earlier this month with Chief Minister N Biren Singh stating that around 80 people have lost their lives. Houses have also been torched during the violence and new incidents have also been reported from some parts of the state.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also visited the state to assess the situation and plan further steps to restore normalcy there. Shah said the central government has constituted an inquiry committee headed by a retired judge to probe the incidents of violence in Manipur that have resulted in loss of life and property.
CBI to probe Manipur violence: Shah
Addressing a press conference here, Shah said a special team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would probe the cases of violence in the state. The Union Minister said, “The Central Government has constituted a committee headed by a retired judge of the rank of Chief Justice of a High Court to investigate these incidents. The Governor of Manipur will lead a peace committee with members of civil society.” do.”
“An inquiry panel will be set up to probe the cause of the violence and identify those responsible for it,” he said. The Union Home Minister assured the people of Manipur that the investigation would be conducted without any bias and discrimination and the guilty would be punished. Shah said, “Multiple agencies are working in Manipur to investigate the violent incidents. The high-level CBI probe into six incidents of violence indicates a conspiracy. We will ensure that the investigation is fair.”
Violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 during a rally organized by the All Tribal Students’ Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The march was organized to protest the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the state’s ST category following a directive from the Manipur High Court on 19 April.
