A $50 million settlement over Apple’s flawed butterfly keyboard design has been finally approved by a federal court judge in California. reuters reported yesterday,
US District Court Judge Edward Davila denied the attempt to modify the settlement, writing in my judgment That 86,000 people filed claims. This ultimately gives an idea of the number of affected people who will receive the compensation paid for the repairs. Or at least the number that heard about the lawsuit and followed it until the settlement agreement reached last July.
The original suit came about because Apple laptops from 2015 to 2019 had a new keyboard design that didn’t hold up well under normal use; Crumbs and dirt, or even just accumulated dust, can cause keys to fail or stick. Casey Johnson famously written framework that “the new MacBook keyboard is ruining my life.”
This final wrinkle in the saga included six objectors who argued that the settlement was not fair to MacBook owners who never had their failing keyboards repaired (and therefore received no cash) or who were offered $125. Thi was only to pay for a replacement, not enough to cover the cost of repairs. But Davila rebutted their objections, saying that merely wanting more money was not enough to deny acceptance of the settlement.
In short, anyone who filed a verifiable claim for keyboard money by the March deadline will be getting their money soon.
