Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) students are working with Diabetes UK to find solutions for people living with type 1 diabetes.
The partnership is part of the university’s Students at the Heart of Knowledge Exchange (SHoKE) project, which has previously seen ARU students work with public sector organizations in Essex and Cambridgeshire to find concrete solutions to issues facing residents Could
Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas is unable to produce a hormone called insulin to control blood sugar levels.
The latest part of the Showcase project saw teams of students develop ideas to help students living with type 1 diabetes make the transition from home to university, following four themes selected by the charity for further development. Con: Empathy and reducing stigma about diabetes; peer counseling; a diabetes app; and a student information pack.
The students presented their work to Diabetes UK CEO Chris Askew at an online event earlier this month, and the projects will be displayed in poster format at an exhibition at the ARU’s Cambridge campus on Tuesday, 28 March.
Trudy Lynch, Showcase Partnership Facilitator at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), said: “This collaboration with Diabetes UK has given our students the opportunity to apply their skills and develop some excellent ideas and challenges facing people living with diabetes. Gave an opportunity to exchange knowledge for understanding.
“Their proposals focus on young people’s contribution to health and social wellbeing and I hope they can be taken forward by Diabetes UK to benefit everyone.”
