According to a Home Ministry spokesperson, at the meeting held in Imphal this morning, prominent personalities assured their commitment to peace and also said that they would work towards restoring peace in the state.

After reaching Imphal last night, Shah met Chief Minister N Biren Singh, some cabinet ministers, officials and some political leaders. Sources said Shah is on a four-day visit to Manipur during which he will hold several rounds of security meetings to assess the situation and plan further steps to restore normalcy. This is the first time that the Home Minister is visiting the northeastern state after the ethnic conflict broke out in Manipur on May 3.

Manipur govt to take action against those spreading misinformation

The Chief Secretary, in his notification, said that no person shall be immune from prosecution under the laws of the country if he is found to be generating or spreading fake news, lies, rumors or misinformation. The State Government will not hesitate to take action as per law against those who are generating or sharing or publishing any false information which may vitiate the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. Every person, individually or on behalf of any group of persons, shall share or publish on any social media platform or in any medium, physical, through any device, located within or outside the State of Manipur will verify any information prior to virtual, audio-visual or electronic, stated in the notification.

Challenges remain in Manipur: CDS

Meanwhile, Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday said the challenges in Manipur have not disappeared but expressed hope that things will settle down in some time, adding that the situation in the north-eastern state is no longer militancy related.

Chouhan was in Pune on Tuesday to review the passing out parade of the 144th course of the National Defense Academy (NDA). When asked about the situation in Manipur, he told reporters, “The Army, Assam Rifles, was deployed in Manipur before 2020. Since the challenges on the northern borders were far greater, we were able to withdraw the Army. Since Had the militancy situation normalised, we were able to do that.”

The situation in Manipur is now “not militancy related”. He said it was a clash between two castes and a law and order situation. “We are helping the state government in this problem,” the CDS said.
