After a disappointing performance in the first Test against India, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite expressed his disappointment at both himself and the batting unit. He admitted the lack of crucial runs at the Windsor Park stadium as a disappointment. Exceptional off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 12 for 131 in the match, which saw West Indies bowled out for 150 and 130 in their respective innings. This resulted in a heavy defeat for the West Indies, as they lost the First Test by a massive margin of an innings and 141 runs. While batting as an opener in the match, Brathwaite could only score 20 and 7 runs.

“We just let ourselves down. What disappointed me the most was that I didn’t get any runs. I feel like I have to lead from the front on this team–and that’s my job. I really want to do better. Getting one or two guys out in the first innings, especially at crucial times, was not good for us. We were putting on a partnership just before lunch and we lost a wicket a ball before. There were times in the game when we lost it – but for me, I think as a senior guy you know I have to lead,” said Brathwaite after the match ended.
He also asked the batsmen to get better at their shot selection ahead of the second Test starting July 20 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
“It’s tough. It’s about keeping the balance and playing the shot, whether it’s defending or sweeping. I think we just didn’t execute the shots we were trying to make. Even today we had some There were defensive dismissals. We have to use the bat more than our pads. Will help us in these circumstances. Talking about the pitch being conducive for spinners, Brathwaite said the first innings total was not good enough despite knowing the conditions beforehand.
“On the toss, I think the pitch was playing pretty well, and it didn’t spin much on day one. I think we let ourselves down with the bat (in the first innings), scored only 150, we knew the pitch would be dry and there would be more spin, and so the first innings total was not good enough.
Brathwaite signed off by praising youngster Alyque Athanaz for being the only bright spot in the match for the hosts. He said, “He started well. You can see that it is related. In bowling, he had a job to do as we lost Cornwall for four hours. His future is bright. Have a strong mind.”
