The much-awaited World Test Championship (WTC) final between Team India and Australia is all set to take place at The Oval from June 7. Rohit Sharma, who earlier impressed with a century against England at the same venue, will be the key player for India. — as a captain and as an important batsman.
Former India captain Virat Kohli has backed Rohit to decide the height of the podium during the final. In an interaction with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Virat praised Rohit for bringing about a remarkable change in red-ball cricket. While Rohit had already established himself as a force to be reckoned with in white-ball cricket, his switch to opening in Test matches since 2019 has elevated his performances in the longer format.
ICC captioned the post, Virat Kohli praised Rohit Sharma and his achievements for India over the years.
Virat expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability to deliver outstanding performances while professing his hunger to succeed in Test cricket after achieving immense success in the white-ball format.
“Rohit always had more time than anyone, when I saw Rohit Sharma bat for the first time, I understood what the hype was about and why he was rated so high,” Virat told the ICC.
Furthermore, Virat emphasized on the challenging nature of the opener’s role and lauded Rohit for his achievements across all formats of the game. Virat expressed his pleasure watching Rohit’s performances, especially from the opposite end, and expressed hope that he can replicate his past success at The Oval.
“Everyone knows his talent for what Rohit has done in white-ball cricket over a long period of time, but the way he has performed in Tests over the years shows he can do it at the highest level in Tests. Well, he actually did in England. Conditions,” Virat further said.

The WTC final will mark the 50th Test appearance of Rohit Sharma, who has averaged 52.76 in 36 innings since 2019 with six centuries and four fifties.
During India’s tour of England in 2021-22, Rohit experienced a significant breakthrough as an opening batsman in Test cricket. He played a key role in India’s historic series win, especially in the second innings of a match where he scored an impressive century.
Rohit scored 368 runs in four Tests during the 2021 tour, which included 14 fours and a six in his remarkable 127-run innings.
