The much-awaited ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia is set to begin on Wednesday at The Oval. In recent times, India have been the more dominant team, finding success in both home and away conditions, which sets the stage perfectly for this one-off encounter. Earlier this year, he featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in which India were victorious in the first two of the four matches.
The WTC final adds a new chapter to their age-old rivalry, as the evenly matched teams aim to cement their status as the best Test team in the world. While both the teams have assembled well-balanced squads for the final showdown, the selection of the playing XI remains intriguing.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has shared his India playing XI. Interestingly, Gavaskar picked KS Bharath as the wicketkeeper ahead of Ishan Kishan and also went with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
Gavaskar said, “For the batting, I will have Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as the opening pair. Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, Virat Kohli at number four and Ajinkya Rahane at number five.”
Gavaskar also insisted that he would give the wicketkeeper’s role to KS Bharat as he has shown consistency at number six.
“At No.7, we have Ravindra Jadeja. If conditions are favourable, Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin can bat at number seven and eight respectively.
In the fast bowling department, it is expected that Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and possibly all-rounder Shardul Thakur will lead the charge.
Gavaskar concluded, “For numbers nine, ten and eleven, we have Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and maybe Shardul Thakur.”
The oval conditions are expected to help the batsmen but if the clouds clear up, the fast bowlers could also come into the picture.
