Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is set to open its first office outside the United States this year, adding to a backdrop of US-based firms seeking greener pastures outside the country.
Chris Dixon, Crypto Founder and Managing Partner of a16z Cited One of the main factors behind its decision to expand is the “anticipated business environment”, and comes amid a number of regulatory actions against crypto firms in the United States in recent months.
Big news to share: @a16z expanding to the uk
We plan to open our first international office in London later this year, and host the next Crypto Startup School there in 2024.

Dixon said the decision was finalized after “productive talks” with the UK prime minister, in addition to “months of constructive dialogue” with HM Treasury, UK policy makers and the Financial Conduct Authority. He added:
“We are thrilled to open our first international office in a jurisdiction that welcomes blockchain technology and is committed to creating a predictable business environment by abiding by regulations that embrace Web3 and protect consumers.”
However, Dixon added that the firm remains “heavily invested” in the US, and will continue to work with policy makers and regulators to push for greater regulatory clarity for crypto startups.
The UK’s new pro-crypto prime minister, Rishi Sunak, attributed the news of a16z’s expansion to setting up the “right regulation and guardrails” to “foster innovation” while protecting consumers.
Sunak said he was “thrilled” by a16z’s decision:
“That is why I am thrilled that world-leading investor Andreessen Horowitz has decided to open its first international office in the UK – testament to our world-class universities and talent and our strong competitive business environment.”
In addition to the new office, a16z has also announced its plans to launch a new “Crypto Startup School” (CSS) program in London in spring (March to June) of 2024.
The CSS Accelerator program will aim to attract UK and international entrepreneurs keen to pursue a career in Web3.
The most recent CSS program received over 8,000 applicants, with 26 companies receiving investment from a16z.
Our next Crypto Startup School will take place in London in Spring 2024, and we hope to attract great teams from the region to build Web3 projects. Our recent CSS in LA included teams from the UK, US, India, Germany, France, Argentina, Ecuador and Canada.https://t.co/vxBIPFuSPj
