The New York City skyline is awash with smoke from wildfires that turned the busy metropolis into a foggy island on Wednesday.
Smoke from Canadian wildfires plunged New York into darkness on Wednesday as cities along the US East Coast issued air quality warnings and thousands of Canadians fled their homes.

A health alert was issued to residents, urging them to stay inside and restrict any outdoor activity “absolutely necessary”. The precaution led to the closure of city zoos in Central Park, Queens and Brooklyn, and schools to cancel outdoor events for the day.

On Wednesday afternoon, June 7, the city’s air quality index soared to an incredible 353, significantly higher than the previous day’s record-low 218.
New York City, also known as ‘New York City’ experiencing Worst air quality since 1980
The smoke had traveled hundreds of miles from Canada and was now affecting more than 100 million people in the northeastern United States, as well as west of Chicago and south of Atlanta, according to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Officials issued warnings that these events could become more frequent as a result of climate change. Smoke from more than 150 wildfires in Quebec, most of which have been judged out of control, is the cause of this apocalyptic haze.

According to officials, the air quality health advisory will remain in force till Thursday, but the city may not get relief from the smog till the end of the week.
