Tyler James Williams marked the beginning of Pride Month with a statement speaking out against assumptions about his sexuality. The ‘Abbott Elementary’ star shared a statement on her Instagram Story on June 4 that began, “Usually I don’t address things like this, but I feel like this conversation is bigger than me.”
He wrote, “I am not gay; But I think the culture of trying to ‘find’ some kind of hidden quality or behavior is very dangerous. The actor further stated that over-analyzing one’s behavior in an attempt to ‘catch’ someone directly contributes to the anxiety that many queers as well as queer questioning people feel when they are unable to identify their true selves. The actor said this perception can make members of the LGBTQ community feel less safe to have everyday conversations as well as explore their sexuality. He does not support the speculations that people make about someone else’s sexuality.
The ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ star said it ‘reinforces archetypes’ that can limit individual expression. The 30-year-old said he wants to use his platform to push back against those hardliners. He further wrote that being straight and being gay do not look the same and what may seem like a harmless conversation can actually send a dangerous message to people struggling with real issues. He unceremoniously refuses to contribute to that message. Tyler then addressed his queer and questioning brothers, sisters and individuals and shared a message of support. In his message, he wrote, “I pray that you feel safe in celebration of the way you feel this month.”
