The emergence of young talent Shubman Gill has generated a lot of optimism among Indian fans. He looks set to inherit the legacy left behind by Virat Kohli and establish his dominance across formats in the years to come. As a result, the debate surrounding Gill’s ability has resurfaced, inviting comparisons between Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and Gill’s ability to meet their high standards.
The young batsman has been in sensational form in recent months. He has already scored five international centuries, including the first in T20Is and a record-breaking double hundred in ODIs. Adding to his accolades, Gill scored three hundreds in the recently concluded IPL. As the cricketing world joins the ongoing debate around Gill’s potential, an Indian cricket legend drew comparisons between Gill and Tendulkar, while also highlighting Kohli’s struggles during the 2014 tour of England.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, Mohammad Kaif said that Gill’s batting style resembles more to Tendulkar rather than Kohli. “I think Gill’s technique is similar to Tendulkar’s. It is very difficult to get him out at this point of time. There seems to be no weakness in his game. Virat and Sachin both are legends. I have played with both, but Kohli has his weaknesses,” Kaif said.
Currently, the 23-year-old Gill is in London, preparing for the most important match of his career so far – the WTC final against Australia. This much-anticipated performance follows his remarkable hundreds in the Border-Gavaskar series in March and his maiden Test century against Bangladesh in November.
Gill’s performance in the WTC final will be crucial as he will partner with Rohit Sharma to establish a solid foundation for the Indian team. Opening the innings, Gill faces the daunting challenge of countering the strong Australian fast bowling battery.
