Lionel Messi’s supporters were left fuming and disappointed as a section of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans booed the Argentine icon ahead of his final game for the club. The 35-year-old joined PSG on a free transfer in 2021, reluctantly departing from Barcelona after a storied career. During his two seasons with the French giants, Messi displayed his prowess, scoring 32 goals and providing 35 assists in 75 games across various competitions. His contributions played a key role in PSG’s victories in three tournaments, including two Ligue 1 titles.
However, despite his impressive performances, Messi had difficulties winning PSG’s faithful. The criticism came to the fore after PSG’s disappointing 3-2 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in last season’s UEFA Champions League round of 16. Messi struggled to make an impact in their 3–0 defeat against Bayern Munich at the same stage in March, causing further frustration. As a result, he faced derision from fans in subsequent matches, which strained his relationship with PSG supporters.
As the season progressed, it became clear that Messi would be leaving PSG this summer. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner confirmed the news ahead of the team’s final Ligue 1 match against Clermont Foot on 3 June. Sadly, Messi’s departure turned bleak as he once again faced condemnation from the PSG faithful. Videos circulating on social media showed fans whistling and voicing their discontent when the forward’s name was announced before the game.

The reaction from PSG fans didn’t sit well with Messi’s loyal supporters. He expressed his disappointment and criticized Messi’s disrespectful behavior towards a player of his stature and contribution to the game. While the Argentine maestro weighs up his options, Barcelona remain keen to re-sign their prodigal son, considering lucrative offers from clubs such as Al-Hilal and Inter Miami. However, the Catalan club must overcome their financial constraints before any possible reunification can take place.

As the curtain rises on Messi’s brief but eventful tenure at PSG, it is disappointing to see such negativity on his final moments with the club. Despite the mixed reception, Messi’s undeniable talent and impact on the field will forever live on in the memories of football fans around the world.
