Odisha train derailment: 18 trains cancelled, many diverted; check helpline numbers

Kolkata: Eighteen long-distance trains were canceled following the horrific triple train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday evening, Indian Railways officials said. Seven trains were also diverted via Tatanagar station. Officials said that 12837 Howrah-Puri Superfast Express, 12863 Howrah-Bangalore Superfast Express and 12839 Howrah-Chennai Mail were cancelled.

Besides this, 12895 Howrah-Puri Superfast Express, 20831 Howrah-Sambalpur Express and 02837 Santragachi-Puri Express were also canceled for the day.

Odisha train derailment

At least 50 people were killed and 350 injured in an accident between the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and a goods train on three different tracks at Bahanagar in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday evening. Officials said the accident took place around 7.20 pm near Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was going from Shalimar station near Kolkata to Chennai Central station.

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner Satyavrat Sahoo had earlier said that dozens of people have been admitted to the Balasore Medical College and Hospital so far. According to reports, several people were trapped under the derailed coaches and locals were helping emergency service personnel to rescue them, but darkness was hampering the operation.

Officials said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed Sahu and Revenue Minister Pramila Malik to rush to the accident site. A South Eastern Railway official said accident relief trains have been dispatched to the spot.

Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat flag off canceled

Following the accident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has canceled his trip to Goa, where he was going to flag off Goa’s first Vande Bharat Express. Ministry of Railways has announced that the flagging off of Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express has now been postponed. The train was to be flagged off virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 3, 2023, and was the first Vande Bharat Express for the Konkan Railway.
