Google’s Bard had a rough launch, with a demo of Bard giving misinformation about the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
At launch, Google tweeted a demo of the AI chat service, with the prompt reading, “What new discovery from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old?” Bard replied: “JWST took the first pictures of a planet outside our own solar system.” People quickly noticed that the output response was factually incorrect.
Too: I asked ChatGPT to write a WordPress plugin that did what I needed. did it in less than 5 minutes
“This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, which we are launching this week with our Trusted Testers program,” a Google spokesperson told ZDNET in a statement.
There were also a lot of negative responses due to the actual performance of the chatbot.
In ZDNET’s experience, Bard failed to answer even basic questions, had long wait times, didn’t automatically include sources, and paled in comparison to more established competitors. Google CEO Sundar Pichai called Bard “a souped-up Civic” compared to ChatGPT and Bing Chat.
Before the release of Bard, Google’s LaMDA also came under fire. As ZDNET’s Tiernan Ray reports, shortly after LaMDA’s publication, former Google engineer Blake Lemoine released a document in which he shared that LaMDA may be “sensitive.” The controversy faded after Google denied the sentiment and placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave before letting him go from the company.
Google’s switch from LaMDA to PaLM 2 will help alleviate many of Bard’s current issues.
