Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that emerging from the IPL 2023 T20 mode will be the biggest challenge for the Indian players when they take on Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final next week. Rohit Sharma’s India will play the WTC final at The Oval from June 7 with most of the players having come through the rigors of IPL 2023, which ended on Monday night with Chennai Super Kings lifting the trophy for a record fifth time.
He said, ‘The biggest test will be that almost everyone will come out of T20 format and Test cricket is a longer format. So, I think it will be a big challenge.

He said that among all the Indian players, only veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is used to the longer format as he is playing county cricket. “They (India) only have Cheteshwar Pujara playing in the English County Championship, so he will be the only player who has played the longer format in these conditions, so it will be a big challenge for them.”
On Ajinkya Rahane, who made a strong comeback in the IPL after a prolonged form slump and helped CSK win the title this season, Gavaskar said the 34-year-old’s experience of English conditions would be beneficial for the side. He has a lot of experience having played in England and scored runs in England. So, yes, I think he is going to play an important role at No.5. His.”
The cricketer-turned-commentator hoped that Rahane would make the most of the opportunity given to him to further his professional career. “I am hopeful that he will be able to capitalize on this opportunity with all his experience and cement his place in the Indian team,” Gavaskar said.
