Legendary cricketer MS Dhoni created history on Tuesday by guiding Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a record-equalling fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title. In a thrilling last-over contest against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Dhoni’s Yellow Brigade emerged victorious, equaling the incredible feat of Mumbai Indians (MI). Dhoni, who holds the record for most matches played in the IPL, played his 250th match in the cash-rich league yesterday.
The 41-year-old drew praise for his exceptional stumping of in-form batsman Shubman Gill in the recently concluded match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Dhoni rewrote the history books in the summit clash by becoming the first Indian cricketer to achieve 300 dismissals with the GT opener’s stumping. However, Dhoni had a forgettable performance with the bat as he was dismissed for a golden duck by GT pacer Mohit Sharma.

In an interview with Sports Tak after the IPL 2023 final, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar mentioned that it would have been a perfect ending if Dhoni had scored the winning runs for Chennai Super Kings. Gavaskar said, “If he had been there to hit the winning runs, it would have been like a cherry on top. But at the end of the day, being a team-man he would have been very happy.”
He insisted that despite Dhoni’s early dismissal, what matters most is the team’s win. Senior fast bowler Mohit Sharma dismissed the dangerous Ambati Rayudu (19 off 8 balls) and followed it up by dismissing Dhoni in the very next ball of the 13th over. However, Mohit’s exceptional bowling efforts were in vain as Dhoni led CSK to successfully chase down a revised target of 171 in 15 overs to win their fifth IPL title in Ahmedabad. After leading CSK to glory, Dhoni hinted at leading the team in the 2024 season of IPL.
Keeping in mind the impact that a tournament like IPL can have on one’s physical and mental energy, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his belief that Dhoni will take some time to take any important decision after the tournament. Gavaskar said, “I believe he will give himself some time, sit with his loved ones, and have a conversation about what can be done. So, we can definitely expect a decision sooner or later.” Are.”
