One of the most prominent health risks of second-hand smoke is the potential for increased respiratory problems, says Dr. Modi. Studies have shown that non-smokers who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of respiratory infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia. Additionally, passive smoking can aggravate existing conditions such as asthma, which can lead to more frequent attacks and worsen symptoms.

Dr Modi shared that there is another heart disease related to the result of passive smoking. Toxic chemicals in secondhand smoke can cause narrowing of blood vessels, increased blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke have been found to have a higher incidence of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events than people without exposure.

The chemicals in tobacco smoke can cause DNA damage and mutations, leading to the initiation and progression of cancer cells. Exposure to secondhand smoke during childhood increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory infections, asthma and impaired lung function. Smoke-free legislation in public places and workplaces can significantly reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. Encourage family members or roommates who smoke to do so outside, away from doors and windows. Enhancing indoor air quality by using an air purifier can be beneficial.
In addition, promoting smoke-free policies in public places and supporting initiatives to reduce the prevalence of smoking are essential steps towards prevention of passive smoking.
