If you’ve been spending (at least) much of your time online, you know that artificial intelligence (AI) is the hottest buzz word right now. So hot, it’s got techies giddy with anticipation and writers fearing for their jobs. I know I am! But what is AI? Beyond the scope of re-imagining Brad Pitt as an Indian monk. A simple search will tell you that it’s a catchy term for an ‘application that performs complex tasks that require one-time human input.’ In simple words – bye man! No, I’m not talking about a machine revolution (yet), instead, it’s machine learning poised to make things easier for creatures that don’t speak binary.
And we’re just getting started with the results. But don’t let that scare me; There is still hope (yes, even the circumstances) in Love Land and resident relationships. Thanks to GenZ and the way they are disrupting the dating game.

according to tinder future of dating report 2023We are in for a renaissance in dating led by GenZ. So, how is technology enabling young guns to have ‘all or nothing’ dating? While this younger generation of singles is excited about the opportunities that AI can bring, it will not be at the expense of reality. As technology continues to disrupt the way people date, the study underscores the importance of authenticity and how!
Gen Z is happy for AI to help create a dating profile (34%), but at the same time, has little interest in generic, auto-filled profiles that lack the authenticity that they hold in such high regard.
It’s important to note that mentions of Chat GPT in Tinder bios have increased 14x since January 1, 2023, according to the study, and young people dating today actually see the benefits of it instead of being intimidated by it. Even within the app,’Are you sure?‘ prompt is in place and appears when the app detects harmful language before it is sent. Similarly, ‘does it bother you, This feature helps users to flag inappropriate conversations.
But does post-pandemic isolation work at all? Coupled with the fact that GenZ-ers are having the best sex with themselves. We recently spoke to Tinder’s CMO, Melissa Hobley, and asked her if AI or bots could ever replace a living/breathing partner.
“I don’t think it will ever become a mainstream thing, but we have to be mindful of individuals who may be more vulnerable because Covid was so different and so difficult, especially for GenZ or 20-somethings. Whatever we do on Tinder, we will not replace human connection.”

And what about dating with holograms like the ones we see in the movies? “We’re far from that. And I say this, when you meet on Tinder, you should make an effort to meet in person within two weeks. So, it’s really important to get together in person. And AI Can’t take the place of chemistry.” If that’s not reassuring for romantics, I don’t know what is.
That said, with the rise of dating trends like vulture (the strategy of giving a shoulder to cry on and swooning at the first opportunity) and the throne (a tactic used to elevate social status), Hoble believes that one should keep looking for the signs and red flags without ignoring them.
With all the prerequisites and boxes now checked, Tinder’s Global Expert in Relationship Insights, Paul C. Brunson, encourages daters to approach dating with an open mind. Because it is possible that we may not know who is our best match unless the algorithm does it for us.
Speaking about the magic of numerical evidence, Brunson told Mashable India,
“It’s only recently that we have research to tell us that we don’t know. Usually we don’t know. However, we do know some things like someone who admires our values, someone who appreciates our compliments communication style. So we know there are certain ingredients that make a strong match. Algorithms/AI are the components that can help us narrow down that group. Because the gift and curse of the app is that that you can meet everyone.
“Attachment theory is a hot thing. The reason it’s so hot right now is because nobody knew about attachment 20 years ago. Attachment theory is a new science. And now we understand how important it is in a match .. So now we can start to incorporate it into the algorithms.”
And apparently, it’s a good time for this to happen because we’re seeing an increase in healthy masculinity and empathetic men thanks to the ‘feedback loop. Brunson explains that the women did ‘incredibly well’ when participating in a ‘feedback loop’ and that is something that is now visible. She’s convinced it’s a tool that essentially helped women become better daters and is now helping men up their gentleman game. And not just GenZ, Brunson cites Millennials as “the first generation to talk openly about concerns.”
He also believes that “GenZ would have the most successful marriages ever. Why? Because they’re investing in emotional well-being and clear communication. Some marriages are perfect, but successful. Statistics say that 85% of GenZ in India agree that their generation is challenging the traditional relationship goals and dating standards that were handed down to them from previous generations.
But hey, what about pop culture? Zoomers care a lot about this. So do the millennium. Guess it’s a good thing Tinder just added another onefast and furious‘ Feathers to your hat of shouting (remember Brad Pitt talking about his Tinder bio?). It not only helps with edge but is also good for business. And Hobley agrees.
“I think that’s part of our edge and that’s part of what makes Tinder interesting. Today more than ever, Tinder has people who are non-binary (folks) and transgenders looking for LGBTQ dates. We care so deeply about the emphasis on culture. We will continue to have an edge on culture because we care about all that data.

In the bigger picture, this makes sense as the report also claims that Tinder is the first place LGBTQ members feel safe before telling their friends and family. They are the fastest growing group, with a 104% increase in people identifying as non-binary within the past year. So, will the app ever be more than a product? Maybe a physical space, a safe haven where real activism can happen?
Melissa Hobley seems hopeful because she believes there is ‘a lot to think about’, the community and the power attached to it. Because god knows ‘GenZ will save us all!’
