Chennai Super Kings (CSK) created history on Monday night, defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets to lift the IPL 2023 title and become record-equalling IPL winners for the fifth time in their history. One person has been instrumental in CSK’s comeback from last season – where they finished second-last and failed to qualify for the playoff stage and that is their skipper MS Dhoni.
The former India captain and wicket-keeper is just 41 years old and in every single match in IPL 2023, Dhoni has received thunderous applause, with people expecting this to be his farewell season. There was a lot of speculation around Dhoni’s retirement date from the very first game of the IPL 2023 season, but the CSK skipper gave some great news to his fans after the final.
Dhoni indicated to commentator Harsha Bhogle in the post-match presentation that he would be open to coming back to lead CSK for at least one more season. “If you see by chance, this is the best time to announce retirement. It is easier for me to say thank you and retire.’
But the tough job is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to be held. But with the love I have received from CSK fans, it will be a gift for them to play one more season. The way he has shown his love and feelings, it is something that I need to do for him.”

Dhoni, who became the first cricketer to play 250 matches in the IPL, admitted that this is the “last part of his career”. “This is the last part of my career. It started from here and the whole house was chanting my name. I had the same situation in Chennai, but it would be nice to come back and play whatever I can. The way I Let’s play cricket, they feel that they can play that cricket.
“There is nothing stereotypical in this and I like to keep it simple. I think every trophy or bilateral series you win has its own challenges. When it comes to crisis, you have got to prepare your people. It is required. The pressure that every person can handle is different. We tried to do that.
Dhoni revealed how he treats different members in the CSK team. “Ajinkya (Rahane) is experienced, but if they (young players) are confused then we talk to them. The special thing about (Ambati) Rayudu is that if he is on the field, he always gives his 100 per cent. We played together for India ‘A’ – he played spin and fast bowlers equally well. I always felt that he would do something special. He is also like me who does not use the phone much.
