New Delhi: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday in the presence of Rahul Gandhi to resolve the infighting in the Rajasthan Congress. AICC general secretary KC Venugopal and party leader from Rajasthan Jitendra Singh were also present in the meeting.
Sources said Congress President Kharge is also scheduled to meet Gehlot’s arch-rival Sachin Pilot later. About half an hour after the meeting between Kharge, Gandhi and Gehlot, AICC in-charge of Rajasthan Sukhjinder Randhawa joined them for the discussion. Kharge and Gandhi are in talks with leaders of poll-bound states to chalk out the party’s strategy for the assembly polls.
The Congress leadership has already held discussions with top leaders of Madhya Pradesh in the morning, following which Gandhi said the party would win 150 seats in the state. Earlier, Gehlot said that the party high command is strong and will never give any post to any leader or worker to persuade them.
The meeting comes after Pilot’s “ultimatum” that he would launch a statewide agitation if his three demands from the state government are not met by the end of this month. Pilot, as one of his demands, has demanded a high-level inquiry into the alleged scams that took place during the tenure of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje government.
Earlier talking to reporters, Gehlot said that there is no such tradition in the party that a post is offered to please a leader. He said, “As far as I know, there is no such tradition in the Congress where a leader asks for something and the party high command offers that position. We have never heard of such a formula.” ” A formula is being worked out to implicate the pilot.
Dismissing such reports, he said that it is only a creation of the media and some politicians may be creating such stories. “This has never happened in the Congress till now and will not happen in future. The Congress party and the high command are very strong and no leader or worker has the guts to demand a post. This does not happen,” he said. ,” the chief minister insisted.
Gehlot and Pilot have been fighting for power ever since the Congress formed the government in the state in 2018. In 2020, Pilot led an unsuccessful rebellion against the Gehlot government, following which he was removed from the posts of the party’s state unit president and deputy chief minister. , Pilot had last month defied a party warning and observed a day-long fast over Gehlot’s “inaction” over alleged corruption under the previous BJP government.
