The Australian women’s team has suffered a major blow ahead of the Ashes as Australia captain Meg Lanning was ruled out of the tour on Saturday morning. According to Cricket Australia, Lanning has been withdrawn from the squad due to a ‘medical problem’. The medical staff working with the Australian team have advised them to stay at home under management. The timeframe of his return is unknown at this point.
Lanning took a mental health break at the end of last year but returned to the national team in January 2023 and led Australia to victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February. Australia’s head of performance (women’s cricket) Shawn Flegler reflected on Lanning’s absence and said it was an unfortunate blow for them, though he insisted his support stood behind the national captain as she embarks on the road to a comeback. “She is obviously disappointed to be left out of the Ashes. This is an important series for the team and she will be missed, but she understands the need to put her health first,” Flegler was quoted as saying by the ICC. “Meg will remain at home where she will continue to work with medical staff with the aim of returning to sport as soon as possible,” he added.
Flegler and Cricket Australia have called for Lanning’s privacy to be respected at this time. “We ask that Meg’s privacy is respected at this time,” Flagler concluded.
Alyssa Healy will captain the women’s team for the Ashes series and has been deputized as vice-captain by Tahlia McGrath.
Lanning will not be replaced in the squad as players from the ‘A’ team will be called up as needed. The Women’s Ashes will begin with a one-off Test in Nottingham from June 22 and then progress to a white-ball clash with three T20Is and three ODIs as part of the multi-format series.
Australia Team: Alyssa Healy (c), Tahlia McGrath (vc), Darcy Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham.
